End of tenancy cleaning tips to help you retain your deposit

Many people like to rush through their end of tenancy cleaning mainly because they are preoccupied with making their next move. However, most end up paying extra charges for damaged property and some even lose their deposit altogether. As such, it’s beneficial to be more efficient and to not treat the end of tenancy cleaning like a casual domestic cleaning job. Here are some tips to help you get that deposit back:

  • Avoid enlisting professional help

If this was something more like a casual office cleaning job, I would have recommended you call your local cleaning services. However, end of tenancy cleaning is a bit more comprehensive and many ends of tenancy cleaning services do not come cheap. In addition to this, not every cleaner is gentle and you risk doing more damage to property by asking strangers to clean for you. If you want to avoid wasting money or causing avoidable damage, consider doing your own cleaning.

  • Create a checklist

As you navigate your way through your home, apartment or office, it’s a good idea to have a checklist on hand so that you know what needs to be fixed and what needs to be completely replaced. You can always ask your landlord for a list of things they look out for when inspecting the space. Most landlords won’t mind if you fix small problems such as broken lights or a chipped tile. However, if there is something significant that calls for attention, you should always inform them before taking matters into your own hands. Never be so consumed with the desire to get your deposit back, that you disrespect other people’s property.

  • Do not forget the exterior

If you are renting a home or office that comes with a garden or any kind of exterior that is your responsibility, it is important to clean it too before the inspection. Again, take note of anything that needs to be repaired or replaced and in the event that it is minor, feel free to take initiative.

End of tenancy cleaning can be beneficial if you do a thorough job and do not have anything major that needs to be repaired or replaced. In the end, keeping a checklist on hand is useful and as always, communication with your landlord is key.
